Aimee was quiet and hung over in the morning. Pamela did her best not to be irritable. She hadn’t slept well last night. The stress of the two sets of neuroses, her own and whatever was going on with Aimee was starting to wear her patience thin. All she had wanted was to spend a quiet night at home with Aimee. Instead, she got left for the evening, both physically and emotionally. Pamela supposed it was her own fault as she had done the same thing to Aimee countless times.

“Are you better?” Pamela asked, as she made her way straight for the coffeemaker.

Aimee poured her a cup.

“Yes. I’m sorry about last night. Too much to drink.”

“They do drink a lot here,” Pamela said, going out to get the paper. Coffee, cigarettes, and the written word would give her back her sense of sanity and order. She sat out on the front porch while Aimee took a shower. She half thought about joining her, but last night’s rebuke sat uneasily in the back of her mind. She wasn’t in the mood for another rejection.
